The theremin in Scandinavia: Birte Laage Hunø

The first of these striking photos, dated 1929, shows Danish music teacher and composer Birte Laage Hunø (1906-1985?), who helped introduce Denmark and Norway to the theremin. The fabulous object behind the theremin is a pleated Lumiere diaphragm speaker. A similar instrument, built by Øyvin Lange (1893-1942?) and dated tentatively to 1930, can be seen at the Norwegian Technical Museum (right).
