Paul Hindemith - Trickaufnahmen für Schallplatte (1930)

Paul Hindemith's fascinating 1930 Trickaufnahmen für Schallplatte ("Trick Recordings for a Phonographic Record") foretold the advent of turntabling, sampling, and musique concrète decades later. Hindemith produced this unusual recording with a xylophone, plucked string (probably of his own instrument, the viola), and a pair of analogue phonograph recorders, manipulating tempos and multitracking a patchwork of samples. Similar approaches were employed later by artists like Pierre Schaeffer, Halim El-Dabh, and Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Hindemith was fascinated by the potential of electronic music, writing several works for Trautonium in diverse combinations, many of which were recorded by Oskar Sala.
